What Is Nano Diamond Powder?

At the nanoscale, diamond has a much higher specific surface area, making surface chemistry and dispersion more important than in conventional micron powders. Nanodiamond can function as both a fine abrasive and a functional additive in lubricants, coatings and composite formulations.

Performance depends on particle or aggregate size, dispersion stability, purity and surface condition. These parameters should be considered together when selecting HND or DND grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about HND and DND selection, particle size, dispersion and surface options.

What is the difference between HND and DND?
HND is produced from HPHT synthetic diamond and provides controlled nano and sub-micron grades with stable abrasive and wear behavior. DND is produced by detonation synthesis and consists of approximately 5 nm primary crystallites with high specific surface area and distinct surface chemistry.
What does the 5 nm size of DND refer to?
The 5 nm value normally refers to the primary diamond crystallite. These crystallites form larger aggregates, so the supplied aggregate or dispersed particle size may be 30 nm or larger depending on the product form, processing method and measurement condition.
Should I choose nano diamond powder or a dispersion?
Dry powder is suitable for customers who will disperse or compound the material themselves. A pre-dispersed product is more suitable when a specific carrier, concentration or effective particle size is required in the final formulation.
Can the nanodiamond surface be modified?
Yes. Surface conditions can be adjusted to improve dispersion or compatibility with water, oil, resin, polymer and composite systems. Available treatments depend on the specific grade and must be confirmed before supply.
What information is needed for grade selection?
Please provide the application, required particle-size definition, carrier or matrix system, target concentration and any purity or surface requirements. For polishing applications, also provide the substrate material and target surface finish.
