IFDM-Internally Foamed Diamond Micropowder
Description: IFDM (Internally Foamed Diamond Micropowder) consists of diamond particles with a controlled micro-porous core. The increased specific surface area and internal voids promote self-sharpening, improve chip clearance and coolant access, and reduce cutting damage for a cleaner surface finish. Particle size and porosity can be tailored to your process. Available from 7 μm and coarser.
What is IFDM?
IFDM is produced via a proprietary foaming process that creates interconnected micro-pores inside each diamond particle while keeping the outer crystal structure robust. This design raises binder contact area and mechanical interlocking in bonded systems, stabilises cutting forces, and maintains strong wear resistance with controlled friability. The result is high throughput with lower scratch depth and improved process consistency in volume manufacturing.
Advantages of IFDM
- Micro-porous core: Larger surface area for stronger bonding and stable cutting.
- Self-sharpening: Controlled micro-breakage reveals fresh edges.
- Low damage & heat: Improved chip flow and cooling.
- Wear resistant, controlled friability: Long life while staying sharp.
- Tightly graded & configurable: Adjustable porosity/size for predictable performance.
Typical Processing Applications
Production:Designed for resin, metal and ceramic-bond tools, coated abrasives, and polishing slurries/pastes where high efficiency and low damage are required..
- Silicon wafering & lapping: Mono- and polycrystalline silicon.
- Sapphire & optical crystals: Low-scratch lapping and pre-polish.
- Engineering ceramics: Alumina, zirconia, SiC and related hard–brittle substrates.
- Window/cover glass & quartz: Stable removal with improved surface quality.
Available Sizes: ≥ 7 μm (coarser grades available).
